Indo-Pakistani War of 1947
- Conflict over Jammu and Kashmir, a princely state with a Muslim majority but a Hindu Maharaja (ruler)
- Majority wanted to accede to India, but Pakistan felt it had a more legitimate claim
- Pakistan occupied the area under the pretense of support a tribal rebellion
- India and Britain supported the Maharaja, and the Instrument of Accession was signed
- UN eventually intervened to help end the conflict with a ceasefire and establish borders
- Conflict resumed in 1965 due to border disputes
- Pakistan unsuccessfully tried to recapture Kashmir
- War ended as a stalemate
- US and UK supplied both sides during war due to Cold War incentives
- UN mediated another ceasefire, and US and UK showed support by stopping arm shipments to both sides
- Negotiations between belligerents continued until 1966, but this was not the final Indo-Pakistani War
